  • Hawaii Bound!

Jamie and I have decided to go back to Hawaii for our 5-year anniversary!  We went to Maui for 10 days for our honeymoon, and had planned on going to the Big Island for our 1-year anniversary, but I got super sick right before and we had to cancel.  So…we’re going to go back for the 5-year instead!

We’re talking about spending two weeks there, and doing two islands.  We’re not going to go back to Maui, since we’ve already been there, but we’re thinking the Big Island and Oahu.  5-6 days on each island should be a good amount!  We’re looking into ziplining, hiking in the Volcano National Park, scuba diving/snorkling, and lots of lazing on the beaches.  I am so excited!!!  I can’t believe we’re coming up on 5 years married already…time sure has flown.  In the past 5 years, we’ve moved abroad twice, built a house (then sold it), got a cat, sold pretty much all our possessions, and are now looking to move back to the US to start all over again.  Craziness!  I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

So…if any of you have been to the Big Island or Oahu…any recommendations??  We’re very outdoorsy people, but I am also a major foodaholic, so I’ll take anything you got!

    XOXOXO,
    K.

  • There’s not a whole lot on the south east side of the Big Island, mostly just the volcano park, some water falls and a hot spring. A couple days tops, and I’d spend the rest on the Kona side. Have fun!

  • will you be driving to hawaii or using those ariline miles? you might as well drive. I know its longer but much of the trip is ocean driving and you don’t have to use nearly as much gas.

  • Oahu: For food, I highly recommend Duke’s in the Outrigger Waikiki. It is delicious. Make reservations because it gets busy so quickly.
Sarento’s at the top of the Ilikai Hotel is delicious. My husband had Ahi Tuna and said it was the best he’s ever tasted, plus the view is wonderful.

When we went to Oahu for our honeymoon we stayed right in Waikiki. Loved our hotel, the infinity pool and the plethora of nightlife and restaurants there, but my biggest piece of advice is to get a car and drive up to the north shore. The beaches are so much calmer up there (well if you go in the winter, they have huge waves because that’s where the Bonzai Pipeline is, but they were calm in the summer). Visit the cute surfer town of Hale’iwa, get shave ice at Aoki’s (it is worth the line) and get shrimp from a shrimp truck on the side of the road (our favorite was Fumi’s). For dessert, two words: Ted’s Bakery. Get the chocolate haupia pie. Heaven.

For active activities, we enjoyed hiking Diamond Head. We aren’t big water sports people but they have TONS of surf lessons on Waikiki and the North Shore. Hanauma Bay is supposed to be the best for snorkeling. We swam with the dolphins at Sea Life Park and really loved that. For a luau (if interested) we did Paradise Cove and would recommend getting the most expensive package if you do it. It’s worth it for the food and beverage service alone and less crowded seating.

Have such a great time! We loved Oahu and can’t wait to make it back to the islands. Our five year anniversary trip will (hopefully) be Maui and Kauai.

  • @Jessss86 - Thanks for the advice!  I’ll definitely add them to my list…everything sounds delicious!
