The Trip...
As I’m sure my last post gave away, Jamie is back in Europe on business. He flew out on Tuesday for Amsterdam and will return tomorrow. It was a super short trip, so I didn’t really think anything of it…no worries really other than the whole physical act of flying, but that’s normal.
And then…the hysteria.
So…I hate it when Jamie is flying. I’m scared of plane crashes (although, who isn’t), and I just don’t like the whole uncertainty of it all. That doesn’t mean I won’t fly…I just don’t like it. So anyways…any time Jamie goes somewhere that requires flying, I ask that he call or text me when he arrives, regardless of the time, so that I know he’s safe. After I know he’s on the ground, I’m just fine. He has no problem with this and is super good about calling as soon as the plane lands so that I don’t worry about him.
Fast-forward to late Tuesday/early Wednesday. Jamie was supposed to arrive in Amsterdam around 7:30am (Netherlands time, which is 1:30am my time…I am 6 hours behind him when he is in Europe). I told him to call my cell phone when he landed, pretty typical. I wake up Wednesday morning to the sound of my alarm. I looked at my phone, thinking I was sad that I had missed his call, but glad that I got some decent sleep. However, no call. No text. Nothing.
In those few seconds, I really didn’t think anything of it. I figured he knew that I hadn’t been getting much sleep lately, so he just didn’t want to call and wake me up. No big deal. So, I called him just to check in. His phone was off. At this point, I am getting a little concerned, but nothing major. I figured his phone was probably dead and he forgot a charger. I decided to get online to see if he was on our work VPN so we could chat for a minute. I signed on, and there were no emails from him, nor was he on our chat service.
Ok…at this point, I’m starting to worry. I tried to look up the flight information, but I was having a hard time finding anything. So, I decided to talk to our co-workers who are over in Europe that he was supposed to be meeting. They hadn’t heard from him either! (Insert panic here). I raced to get ready and headed to work, hoping that by the time I got there, he would be online.
I get to work. Nothing. He’s not online, no one has heard from him…and I have NO way of getting hold of him! I decided to call the hotel where he was supposed to be staying to see if he had checked in yet. I get in touch with the front desk, where they tell me that they have no reservation under his name. At this point, I am at work, crying and I can’t find my husband!
And then, he calls. I pulled a total “Mom” moment and answered the phone demanding to know “where in God’s name have you been!” He tells me that he did in fact text me, but his phone has been missing calls left and right, so something much have happened to the text (its now Thursday and I still don’t have it). Then, he missed his first train from Amsterdam to Eindhoven and had to wait another 30 minutes for the next one. Once he was on the train, he started feeling really sick to his stomach and clammy/sweaty, so when he got to Eindhoven, he begged the hotel to let him check in early so that he could be in his room when he got sick. They checked him in and he got settled, then fell asleep because he was so exhausted. When Jamie sleeps, he turns off his cell phone, which was why when I kept calling, it wasn’t on. He sounded like death warmed over, so I didn’t yell at him too much, and he felt really bad that I had spent the morning tracking him down and worrying. Needless to say, it was an exhausting morning yesterday!
So yeah…everything is ok now. He’s safe and sound, and ready to come home tomorrow! I’m so glad he’ll be back for the 4th, since it’s one of my favorite holidays.
Just wanted to share a little bit of my panic with all of you! Hope you have a great holiday!
XOXOXO,
K.
